Animorphs was a popular game series for the Nintendo Game Boy Color developed and published by Mindscape.
It was based on the popular book series of the same name by K.A.
Applegate, and featured characters from the books.
The game follows five teenagers who are granted the power to transform into various animals in order to battle against an alien race known as the Yeerks.
The Animorphs video game series was released in three parts; the first two being side-scrolling action games and the third being an overhead adventure title.
All three games were similar in nature, with each installment focusing on one of the five main characters from the books: Jake, Marco, Rachel, Cassie, and Tobias.
Each character had their own set of abilities that could be used to solve puzzles or defeat enemies while playing through each level.
The first two installments in the Animorphs series were titled Animorphs: The Invasion and Animorphs: The Countdown respectively.
Both titles were side-scrolling action games that required players to guide their chosen character through levels filled with enemies and obstacles.
In addition to fighting enemies, players also had to solve puzzles throughout each level in order to progress further into the game.
Players could also find various power-ups throughout each stage which would grant them additional abilities or health bonuses when used correctly.
The third installment in the Animorphs series was titled Animorphs: Shattered Reality and it took a different approach than its predecessors by introducing an overhead perspective rather than side-scrolling action gameplay.
This installment focused more heavily on puzzle solving than combat as players were tasked with guiding their character around a large map while finding solutions for various problems they encounter along their journey.
Enemies still existed within this installment but they were few and far between compared to previous titles in the series.
Overall, all three titles in the Animorphs video game series received positive reviews from critics who praised their unique blend of puzzle solving and action gameplay elements as well as their faithful recreation of characters from the book series which fans of both mediums appreciated greatly at release time.
Although none of these titles achieved commercial success due to their limited availability on Nintendo's handheld console at launch, they remain fondly remembered today as cult classics among fans of both literature and gaming alike.
