Novastorm is a 1994 shoot-em-up video game developed by Psygnosis and published by Sony Imagesoft for the Sega CD and Mega CD (Sega Mega Drive). It was also released for the PlayStation in 1995. The game takes place in the year 2090, where mankind has advanced to the point of intergalactic travel. The player takes control of a futuristic fighter craft called the "FireStorm" as they explore various planets, searching for an ancient artifact known as "The Key".
The game features five levels set across three different planets: Corax, Pandarve, and Quarl. Each level contains a number of enemies that must be destroyed before progressing to the next level. Some levels feature bosses that must be defeated before completing them. Throughout each level, power-ups can be collected to upgrade weapons or gain extra lives.
Novastorm is a fast-paced top-down shooter that emphasizes speed and reflexes over strategy. The player's FireStorm moves quickly around the screen, dodging enemy fire while shooting down foes with its primary weapon, secondary weapons or bombs. All weapons can be upgraded by collecting power-ups throughout each stage or by finding special items hidden in certain areas.
The graphics are colorful and detailed, with large sprites and impressive effects such as scaling and rotation used to create a sense of depth on the two dimensional battlefields. The music is an energetic mix of techno beats which fits perfectly with the intense action onscreen.
Novastorm is an enjoyable shoot-em-up with plenty of challenge for experienced players and accessible controls for newcomers to the genre. Its fast pace and varied levels make it a great choice for those looking for an exciting gaming experience on their Sega CD or Mega CD console.
