WWF Royal Rumble is a professional wrestling video game developed by British studio Beam Software and released for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive in 1993. It is based on the World Wrestling Federation's annual Royal Rumble event, which sees competitors from multiple wrestling promotions compete in a battle royal-style match.
The game features portraits of wrestlers from the WWF at the time, such as Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart, Razor Ramon, and Shawn Michaels. Players are able to choose from two single-player modes: Exhibition Match and King of the Ring Tournament. The Exhibition Match allows players to choose their wrestler and fight against up to five computer-controlled opponents or against another human player. In the King of the Ring tournament mode, players must win several matches to become champion.
In both modes, each match begins with two wrestlers in the ring, while new wrestlers enter at regular intervals determined by a virtual "Rumble Meter". As each wrestler enters they can attack any other wrestler in the ring until they are eliminated by being thrown over the top rope. The last remaining wrestler wins the match.
The game also features a variety of special moves that can be used to eliminate opponents more quickly, including body slams, suplexes and signature moves specific to certain wrestlers (such as Razor Ramon's "Razor's Edge" move). These moves can be performed when a wrestler has built up enough energy by performing basic grappling moves on their opponent or by pressing a button combination on the controller.
The graphics in WWF Royal Rumble are fairly basic but are still quite effective at conveying action onscreen during matches. The wrestlers' sprites are well animated and feature detailed facial expressions that change depending on how much damage they have taken during a match. The sound effects are also good and feature authentic crowd noise and commentary from announcers Vince McMahon and Bobby Heenan (who were famously known for their colourful commentary during WWF events).
Overall WWF Royal Rumble is an enjoyable title that captures all of the excitement of its real-life counterpart while also providing plenty of fun gameplay options for fans of professional wrestling across all ages. Despite its age it remains an entertaining experience that still holds up today - perfect for anyone looking for some nostalgia or just some old-school gaming fun!
