Turbo Outrun is a racing game released for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive console in 1989. Developed by Sega-AM2 and published by Sega, it was one of the first games released on the system and an early example of an open world driving game.
The game is set in a fictionalized version of the United States, with players controlling a Ferrari Testarossa as they attempt to race across the country while outrunning a rival racer. The player must navigate through various cities, towns and highways while avoiding obstacles such as police cars and other traffic. Along the way, they can collect power-ups to increase their speed or gain extra lives.
The game features two modes: Race Mode where players compete against each other for the fastest time; and Outrun Mode where players try to outrace their opponent from start to finish. In both modes, players must complete three stages before reaching their destination. The stages include Countryside, City and Highway stages that feature varying levels of difficulty. Additionally, there are special bonus stages that can be accessed by driving through specific gates located throughout each stage. These bonus stages allow players to win extra points or lives depending on how quickly they complete them.
The graphics in Turbo Outrun are detailed and colorful, with realistic effects such as rainbows reflecting off car windows or bright lights illuminating night time scenes adding to the atmosphere of each stage. The music is also noteworthy, featuring catchy synthpop tunes that perfectly match the fast pace of racing action found in the game.
Overall, Turbo Outrun is an enjoyable classic racing title that helped define what open world racing games would become today. With its vibrant visuals, engaging soundtrack and challenging gameplay, it remains an enjoyable experience even decades after its release.
