Triple Play Gold is a sports video game released for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive console in 1994. Developed and published by Electronic Arts, the game is based on the popular Triple Play baseball series and features an enhanced version of the original game with new features and improved graphics.
The game includes all 30 major league teams from 1994, including their players' statistics from that season. Players have the option to choose from three different modes of play: Exhibition, Season, or All-Star Game. In Exhibition mode, players can choose to play a single exhibition match between two teams selected by them. They can also select the length of innings (from 1 to 9) and difficulty level (Easy, Medium or Hard). The Season mode allows players to manage a team for up to 162 games in a single season and compete against computer-controlled opponents or another human player via split screen. The All-Star Game mode pits two teams of all-stars against each other in a one-off match.
The gameplay itself remains largely unchanged from the original Triple Play series; however, there are some notable additions such as improved batting controls that allow greater control over hitting direction and power as well as improved pitching mechanics that allow pitchers to throw more accurately. Additionally, new fielding controls are included which allow players to dive for balls and catch fly balls with greater precision than before.
The visuals of Triple Play Gold have also been significantly upgraded compared to its predecessors; featuring more detailed sprites for both players and stadiums along with improved animation sequences during plays such as diving catches or home runs being hit out of the park. The sound effects have also been updated with digitized voice clips for umpires calling out plays as well as crowd cheers when something exciting happens during a game.
Overall, Triple Play Gold is an excellent sports title for those looking for an enhanced version of classic baseball action on their Sega Genesis/Mega Drive console. With its improved graphics, sound effects and overall gameplay mechanics it's still one of the best entries in the genre even today making it perfect for those looking for some retro sports gaming fun!
