Tetris is a classic puzzle video game that was released in 1989 for the Sega Genesis Mega Drive. It was developed by Russian programmer Alexey Pajitnov and published by Sega. The objective of the game is to score points by clearing lines of blocks called Tetriminos, which fall from the top of the playing area to form complete rows, which then disappear and grant the player points. The player must rotate and move each Tetrimino as it falls so that it fits into place on the bottom of the screen. If the Tetriminos fill up to the top of the playing area, then it’s game over for the player.
The original version of Tetris had several different modes including Marathon Mode, where players attempt to clear 150 lines as quickly as possible; 40-Line Mode, where players try to clear 40 lines before time runs out; and Puzzle Mode, where players must clear specific shapes before time runs out. In addition to these modes, there were also two-player VS Modes where players can compete against each other with either cooperative or competitive playstyles.
The music used in Tetris is iconic and has become one of its most recognizable features. It includes a catchy Russian folk tune arranged by composer Hirokazu Tanaka that plays during gameplay and adds a unique flavor to the experience.
Tetris was an instant success when it was first released on the Sega Genesis Mega Drive console and remains popular today even after more than 30 years since its initial release. It has been ported onto multiple platforms including iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch and Steam so that anyone can enjoy this timeless classic anytime they want!
