Test Drive II - The Duel is a racing video game developed and published by Accolade for the Sega Genesis Mega Drive in 1990. It is the sequel to Test Drive, which was released for the Apple II, Commodore 64, and PC in 1987. The game features two modes of play: a single-player mode where players compete against computer-controlled opponents in a series of races, and a two-player split screen mode where two players can race against each other. The game takes place on four different courses located in California, Nevada, Arizona, and Hawaii. Each course consists of multiple stages with varying difficulty levels.
The main objective of the game is to complete each course as quickly as possible while avoiding obstacles and other vehicles. Players can choose from seven different cars to race with: Corvette Stingray ZR1, Porsche 959 Turbo S, Ferrari F40, Lamborghini Diablo SV, Jaguar XJ220SV, Lotus Esprit SE Turbo, and McLaren F1 GTR. As players progress through the game they will unlock new courses and cars to race with. In addition to racing against computer-controlled opponents or another player via split screen mode; players can also participate in drag races or time trials against their own best times or those set by others via leaderboards.
The graphics in Test Drive II are colorful and detailed with realistically rendered backgrounds along with some nice lighting effects that give depth to the tracks. The sound effects are also well done and feature realistic engine revs and tire squeals that add to the overall atmosphere of the game. Controls are very responsive allowing players to make tight turns around corners while still maintaining speed throughout each stage.
Overall Test Drive II - The Duel is an enjoyable racing experience that offers plenty of challenge for both novice racers as well as experienced ones alike thanks to its variety of courses and cars available for selection. Its simple yet effective visuals combined with great sound effects make it one of the best racing games available on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive platform at the time it was released back in 1990.
