Spider-Man and Venom: Separation Anxiety is a co-operative video game developed by Acclaim Studios London, released for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive in 1994. It is based on Marvel's comic book series, with both Spider-Man and his enemy Venom as playable characters. Unlike many other Marvel titles released before and after Separation Anxiety, the story of the game does not involve fighting against super-villains from the comic books. Instead, it focuses around these two classic enemies joining forces against an even bigger and more mysterious threat.
The plot of the game starts off with a dangerous toxin affecting both humans and superheroes throughout New York City. As Spider-Man and Venom investigate, they soon discover it was the source of an alien race called Scriers that intend to cause complete chaos throughout Earth. As our two heroes learn of their mission, it becomes quickly apparent that they cannot destroy the toxin without working together - something that neither hero was expecting nor willing to do at first!
In order to accomplish their goal of destroying the toxin and defeating the Scriers, Spider-Man and Venom must team up to battle through 6 stages set around different parts of New York City. These stages involve battling henchmen placed by the aliens, with puzzles being required in order to progress through levels. In total there are 10 weapons obtainable throughout these levels ranging from web shots to rockets launchers! Enemies range greatly from robots to flying eels that attempt to separate our hero duo across each stage - forcing them think with teamwork in order to move forward!
Separation Anxiety’s graphics are quite detailed for a Sega Genesis system - featuring 16 bit sprites of our heroes alongside still cartoons displayed during dialogue scenes between characters. While gameplay has a noticeable lack of smoothness due timing issues (which was very common in licensed games from this era), as experiences go this title still stands fairly decent today!
Overall Separation Anxiety is quite an interesting proposition amongst all Marvel releases from 1993 onward. While it could be argued that it lacks content compared to other titles - its focus upon cooperative play over solo endeavours makes for one great gaming experience! If you ever find yourself bored out of your mind wanting some 16 bit comfort gaming - give this game a shot first before attempting another superhero venture filled with villains Galactus!
