Shadow Dancer – The Secret of Shinobi is a side-scrolling action platform video game for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive developed and published by Sega. It was first released in Japan on November 22, 1990 with releases in other regions following thereafter.
Shadow Dancer takes place in a fictional metropolitan metropolis known as Neo City. Following the events of its predecessor, Shinobi III: Return Of The Ninja Master, an international terrorist ring called the "Ring of Five" have taken control over Neo City and seek to use their influence to overthrow the government. Players take control of Joe Musashi – the main protagonist from the original Shinobi trilogy and must free the city from their grip.
Gameplay consists of navigating through 10 stages while combating enemies using various ninjutsu techniques such as hotai magic, smoke bomb evasion, and more. Additionally, new moves have been incorporated such as a double jump, dash attack and wall climbing abilities. Throughout each level are various collectibles that can be obtained, such as gold coins used to purchase new items or power-ups at shops located at specific points within each stage, including extra lives and health restoratives.
One unique feature about Shadow Dancer is that players can gain assistance from Joe's faithful canine companion Takeshi during gameplay by either throwing him at enemies or having him bark to lure away foes; which then become easier to attack without interruption. A different variation of play is also offered for those willing to aid Takeshi – to access it players must reach certain points throughout each level where they'll be able to toggle between 3 different difficulties: Action Mode (normal), Dog Mode (a “beat ‘em up” style with Takeshi assisting) and Combat Mode (shifting focus more towards attacking multiple enemies).
Other notable features include boss fights against a variety of cyberized opponents found at various stages within Neo City; some of which require skillful usage of specific ninjas skills like knocking down 4 pillars simultaneously or hurling fireballs to create makeshift stairs so you can get close enough to perform a torch throw attack that will weaken armored enemies. Reaching higher levels will also unlock Megahawk weapons; these special attacks can be used once per stage when holding down both buttons simultaneously while pressing directional pad left or right twice quickly before jabbing forward on an enemy’s head quickly before releasing button 2 - shattering nearby barriers allowing progression further into each respective level depending what direction pad was pressed .
In conclusion Shadow Dancer - The Secret Of Shinobi offers plenty for players looking for fast-paced arcade action featuring lots challenges & enemy variety whilst trying their best to rescue Neo City from its impending doom brought upon by terrorists & dreaded robotic henchmen commanded by them… providing hours worth of chaotic & intense gameplay set across 10 thrilling stages mixed with an intriguing story line complimented beautifully by humor & sentimentality demonstrated masterfully through Joe’s never ending unwavering courage & enthusiasm alongside his loyal canine sidekick Takeshi... ensuring gamers alike come back time after time eager for more!
