X-Men is a side-scrolling action game released for the Sega Game Gear in 1992. Developed by Sega and based on the popular Marvel Comics series of the same name, the game follows the exploits of Professor X and his team of mutant superheroes as they battle against their arch nemesis, Magneto, and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.
The player takes control of one of six different X-Men characters: Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm, Rogue, Gambit or Beast. Each character has their own special abilities and moves which can be used to defeat enemies and progress through levels. For example, Cyclops can fire an optic blast at enemies while Wolverine can use his claws to slash them. Similarly, Storm can generate wind gusts to blow away foes while Rogue can absorb their powers with a touch. As well as these special moves each character also has basic attacks such as punches and kicks which can be used to take down enemies.
The game consists of seven levels that take place in various locations including The Savage Land, Asteroid M and Genosha where players must battle waves of enemies before facing off against a powerful boss at the end. Enemies range from regular humans to giant robots and mutants such as Sabretooth and Pyro. Throughout each level there are also power-ups which allow players to restore health or gain extra lives.
In addition to its single-player mode X-Men also features a two-player cooperative mode allowing two players to join forces in order to complete levels together. This mode allows for more strategic play as both players must work together in order to defeat tougher enemies or progress through difficult areas.
Overall X-Men is an enjoyable action game that makes good use of its source material with plenty of challenging levels and exciting boss battles for fans of both Marvel Comics and video games alike. With its unique characters, vibrant visuals and engaging gameplay it remains one of the best action games ever released for the Sega Game Gear console.
