Shining Force Gaiden: Final Conflict is a turn-based tactical role-playing game released for the Sega Game Gear in 1995. It is a spin-off of the Shining Force series, and takes place after the events of Shining Force Gaiden II: The Sword of Hajya.
The game stars protagonist Anri, a young knight from Guardiana who has been chosen to wield the power of light to save his kingdom. He is joined by allies such as Musashi, a ninja; Mycale, an elf; and others. Together they must battle through enemies such as monsters, demons, and evil knights in order to restore peace to Guardiana.
Gameplay consists of two main aspects: exploration and combat. During exploration segments, players move their party around on an overhead map that displays towns, dungeons, and other points of interest. Players can interact with NPCs or enter dungeons in order to complete objectives or find items that can be used in battle. Combat takes place in an isometric view where characters are positioned on a grid-based battlefield and take turns executing actions such as attacking or casting spells. When all enemies have been defeated, the player's party will gain experience points which can be used for character growth.
In addition to its standard story mode, Final Conflict also features two additional modes: Mission Mode and Duel Mode. In Mission Mode players are given specific objectives to complete during battles while Duel Mode pits two players against each other in head-to-head battles using their own customized parties.
Final Conflict's visuals are presented with bright colors and detailed sprites that capture the spirit of 16-bit RPGs quite well despite being limited by the Game Gear's hardware capabilities. Its soundtrack is composed by Motoi Sakuraba who provides an array of catchy tunes that perfectly fit each situation.
Overall Shining Force Gaiden: Final Conflict combines classic tactics RPG gameplay with charming visuals and music creating a highly enjoyable experience for fans of strategy games from the 16-bit era or newcomers alike looking for something different from traditional JRPGs .
