Shaq Fu is a 2D fighting game developed by Delphine Software International and published by Electronic Arts for the Sega Game Gear in 1994. The game stars NBA basketball star Shaquille O'Neal as he travels to a parallel universe in order to save a young boy from an evil mummy.
The gameplay of Shaq Fu is similar to other classic fighting games of the era, such as Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat. Players must select one of six playable characters, each with their own unique moves and special attacks. The game features three modes: Story Mode, Vs Mode, and Training Mode.
In Story Mode, players take on the role of Shaq as they battle various opponents in an effort to rescue the kidnapped child from the clutches of an evil mummy. Along the way, they will encounter numerous obstacles that must be overcome before progressing further into the story. This mode also includes boss battles which are larger than normal enemies and require more strategy to defeat.
Vs Mode allows players to compete against each other or against computer-controlled opponents in one-on-one matches. It features a variety of options such as handicap settings, tournament mode, and survival mode.
Training Mode gives players the chance to practice their skills against a computer opponent without causing any damage to their character's health bar. They can also customize their character's moveset and practice combos before taking them into battle against real opponents in either Story or Vs Modes.
Shaq Fu received mixed reviews upon its release due to its lack of depth compared to other fighting games at the time and some technical issues such as slowdown during battles when too many projectiles were onscreen at once. Despite this, it has since become something of a cult classic among fans who appreciate its unique combination of NBA star power with traditional fighting game mechanics.
