Star Ocean is a role-playing video game released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1996. The game was developed by tri-Ace and published by Enix, and it is part of the Star Ocean series. The story follows a young man named Roddick who lives in a small village on the planet Expel. Roddick and his two friends, Millie and Dorne, are sent on a quest to save their world from destruction by an unknown force.

The gameplay of Star Ocean consists of exploration, combat, puzzle solving, item gathering, and character interaction. During exploration, players will explore dungeons and overworlds while engaging in battles with monsters and other enemies. Combat utilizes an action battle system that allows players to move freely around the battlefield while attacking or defending against enemies. Players can also use special techniques called Arts that require MP points. Puzzle solving involves exploring dungeons to find hidden items or solve puzzles to progress further in the game. Item gathering involves collecting items dropped by enemies or found in treasure chests throughout the game world that can be used to craft weapons or armor for characters. Character interaction includes talking to NPCs (non-player characters) throughout the game which can provide information about plot elements or side quests, as well as recruiting new party members for your team.

Star Ocean features a unique character development system called Private Actions which allow players to customize their party members based on their choices during conversations with NPCs throughout the game world. Private Actions also influence NPC relationships with each other which can affect future conversations and events within the game’s storyline.

Star Ocean’s graphics are rendered using pre-rendered sprites which give it a unique visual style that stands out compared to other games released at the time of its release. The music is composed by Motoi Sakuraba who has worked on many other games in the series since then such as Valkyrie Profile and Tales of Symphonia among others.
