Might and Magic II: Gates to Another World is a turn-based role-playing game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). Developed by New World Computing and published by Konami, the game was released in 1994 as part of the long-running Might and Magic series. The game follows a group of adventurers who must travel through mysterious gates to another world in order to save their own from destruction.
The game has an open-world structure with no predefined paths or objectives. Players create a party of up to four characters from one of six classes; Knight, Cleric, Paladin, Archer, Sorcerer and Thief. Each class has its own unique skills and abilities that are used throughout the game. Characters can be customized with various items such as armor, weapons, and magical artifacts that are found during exploration or bought in shops. Combat is handled through a turn-based system where players take turns attacking enemies with either physical or magical attacks. As characters gain experience points from battles they will level up which increases their stats and allows them to learn new spells or abilities.
Exploration takes place across two different worlds: Enroth and Jadame. Enroth is a medieval fantasy world filled with dungeons, forests, villages and cities while Jadame is a more technologically advanced world populated by robots and aliens. Throughout exploration players will come across puzzles that need to be solved in order to progress further into the story or unlock hidden areas. There are also numerous side quests which can be completed for rewards such as money or items.
Might & Magic II offers an immersive storyline that keeps players engaged throughout their adventure. The visuals have aged well over time due to its use of Mode 7 scaling effects on both the overworld map and character sprites which gives it a unique look compared to other SNES games at the time. While some may find the difficulty curve too steep at times due to its unforgiving combat system, overall Might & Magic II: Gates To Another World is an enjoyable experience for those looking for an old school RPG adventure on the SNES console.
