Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei (translated as Old Testament Goddess Revelation) is a role-playing video game developed and published by Atlus for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). It was originally released in Japan in 1992, and later localized and released in North America in 1995. The game is a remake of the first two entries in the Megami Tensei series, Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei and Digital Devil Story II: War of the Human Gods. The game combines both stories into one, while also adding new elements such as improved graphics, sound, gameplay mechanics, and extra content.
The story follows protagonist Akemi Nakajima as he discovers an ancient tome known as the "Devil Summoning Program" which allows him to summon powerful demons from another realm. With this newfound power, Akemi sets out on a quest to save Tokyo from an impending apocalypse. Along his journey he meets allies such as Yumiko Shirasagi and Jun Kurosu who help him fight against various demons and villains who threaten the world. He must also make moral choices throughout his adventure that will determine his fate at the end of the game.
The gameplay of Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei consists of exploring dungeons filled with monsters, puzzles, traps, and treasures while fighting enemies using physical attacks or summoning powerful demons to aid you in battle. When summoned, these demons can be used to attack enemies or cast spells on them depending on their type. As you progress through the game, you gain experience points which can be used to level up your character’s stats or increase their skillset. There are also multiple endings depending on your choices during certain parts of the story.
Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei features enhanced 16-bit visuals compared to its predecessors with detailed character sprites and backgrounds rendered with vibrant colors that give it a unique aesthetic quality. The soundtrack is composed by Tsukasa Masuko who has worked on other entries in the series such as Shin Megami Tensei I & II for SNES as well as many other titles. The music is atmospheric yet hauntingly beautiful at times which helps set up a mysterious atmosphere throughout your journey across Tokyo’s demon-infested streets.
Overall Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei is an excellent example of what early JRPGs had to offer with its engaging storyline combined with its deep combat system that rewards players for experimenting with different strategies when facing off against enemies or solving puzzles within dungeons. Its enhanced visuals still hold up today despite being over 25 years old making it a great entry point for those interested in experiencing classic JRPGs from yesteryear without sacrificing modern standards of visual fidelity.
