In Race Mode, both players race to reach the end of the course first; whoever crosses the finish line first wins. In Battle Mode, each player has three lives and must defeat their opponent by depleting their life meter before they run out of lives. After completing both modes successfully, players are rewarded with extra lives and points that can be used to purchase items at shops located throughout each stage.

The graphics in HiGeMaru are bright and colorful with detailed backgrounds that capture the fantasy world setting perfectly. The soundtrack is upbeat and catchy with several memorable tunes that add to the overall charm of this classic NES title.
