Tesserae is a classic puzzle game for the Nintendo Game Boy. It was released in 1990 and is still considered one of the best puzzle games for the system. Tesserae has simple yet addictive gameplay that makes it a great choice for casual gamers and long-time fans alike.
The basic premise of Tesserae is to match blocks of four different colors (red, yellow, green and blue) into rows of four or more. When this is done, those blocks will disappear and you’ll score points. The objective is to clear all the blocks from the board before it gets filled up with new ones. As you progress through the levels, new types of blocks are added to make things more challenging. There are also bonus items such as bombs which can be used to clear out large sections of blocks at once.
The controls in Tesserae are simple enough that even young children can pick up on them quickly. You use the D-pad to move your cursor around the board, while pressing A and B will rotate a block clockwise or counterclockwise respectively. For those who are unfamiliar with this type of game, there’s an in-game tutorial that does a great job of explaining how everything works.
The visuals in Tesserae are quite nice considering its age; there’s plenty of vibrant colors and interesting backgrounds that make each level feel unique. The music is also quite catchy; it fits perfectly with the action on-screen and keeps players engaged throughout their playthroughs.
Overall, Tesserae is an excellent puzzle game for the Game Boy that stands up well even today due to its timeless gameplay mechanics and charming graphics/soundtrack combo. If you’re looking for a classic puzzler to play on your Game Boy or emulator then you should definitely give Tesserae a try!
