Marios Picross is a puzzle game developed by Nintendo for the Game Boy in 1995.
The game was later released on the Super Famicom and Nintendo DS platforms.
The player takes on the role of Mario as he solves puzzles by filling in blocks with the help of clues.
It is one of the earliest examples of a nonogram-style puzzle game, predating such popular titles as Picross and Nonograms.
In Marios Picross, players are presented with a grid containing numbers along its sides and top.
These numbers indicate how many blocks need to be filled in each row or column respectively.
The goal is to fill in all the blocks correctly according to these clues, creating a picture when complete.
Players use an "X" button to mark blocks that should be left empty and a "V" button to mark those that should be filled in; incorrect guesses can be undone using an "undo" button.
Once all the blocks have been filled correctly, the puzzle is completed and points are awarded based on how quickly it was solved.
Additional points can be earned if the player completes levels within certain time limits or with no mistakes made.
The game features two modes: Marios Picross and Marios Picross+.
In Marios Picross mode, players must solve 10x10 grids of various sizes, ranging from 5x5 up to 15x15 puzzles.
There are also special challenges called "Master Puzzles", which require more advanced techniques such as chaining multiple solutions together.
Marios Picross+ mode introduces larger 20x20 grids with additional rules such as having multiple lines intersect at certain points or having some squares permanently marked as empty or filled in from the start.
Both modes also feature bonus stages which grant extra points if completed successfully.
Marios Picross has been praised for its easy-to-learn gameplay mechanics and simple but challenging puzzles, making it a great entry point into nonogram-style puzzle games for newcomers.
Furthermore, its portability on handheld consoles makes it perfect for quick gaming sessions while on-the-go or during short breaks between tasks.
Despite being over 25 years old at this point, Marios Picross still stands out among other nonogram games due to its unique visuals and music which perfectly capture Mario's world without resorting to 3D graphics or modern soundtracks like many other titles do nowadays.
Overall, Marios Picross remains one of Nintendo's most beloved puzzle games thanks to its timeless gameplay mechanics and charming presentation style that has aged well over time despite its age; it serves as proof that sometimes all you need is an intuitive control scheme combined with cleverly designed levels to create an addictive experience that will stand the test of time - no matter what platform you play it on!
