Donkey Kong is one of the most iconic video game characters of all time. The classic Nintendo game first appeared in 1981 and has since spawned numerous sequels, spin-offs, and even a movie adaptation. Donkey Kong is a platformer game where players take control of Mario as he attempts to save Pauline from the clutches of the eponymous villain, Donkey Kong. The objective is to climb ladders, dodge barrels, and jump over obstacles to get to the top of each level. Along the way, you can collect items such as coins and power-ups that will help you on your quest.
The original version of Donkey Kong was released for the Nintendo Game Boy in 1994. This version featured several improvements over its predecessor including an updated color palette and improved character sprites. It also included levels exclusive to this version such as a snowboarding minigame. The Game Boy version was a huge success with critics praising its graphics and gameplay. It sold over three million copies worldwide making it one of the best selling games on the system at the time.
Donkey Kong has gone on to become one of Nintendo’s most beloved franchises with multiple sequels appearing across various consoles throughout the years. In 1996, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest was released for Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). This installment introduced new playable characters such as Diddy Kong and added more levels than ever before. A few years later, in 1999, Donkey Kong 64 hit store shelves for Nintendo 64 offering gamers an even bigger adventure with over 30 levels spread across five different worlds.
In addition to sequels, there have been many spin-off titles that feature Donkey Kong in various forms such as racing games (Mario Kart 8 Deluxe), puzzle games (Mario vs DK: Minis March Again!), or even educational titles (DK Math Blaster Plus!). There have also been several crossovers between other popular franchises like Animal Crossing or Mario Party which often feature DK as a playable character or NPC (non-playable character). Outside of gaming, Donkey Kong has made appearances in film and television shows such as Wreck-It Ralph or The Simpsons which further cemented his status as an icon within pop culture today.
Today, Donkey Kong continues to be a fan favorite amongst gamers thanks to its timeless appeal and classic gameplay mechanics. With dozens of titles spanning nearly four decades now available on modern systems like Switch or 3DS - there is no shortage of ways to experience this beloved franchise!
