Darius Plus is a game for the Nintendo Game Boy that was released in 1990.
Developed by Taito, Darius Plus is a side-scrolling shooter that follows the adventures of protagonist Silver Hawk as he battles against an alien race known as Belsar.
The game features five levels, each with their own unique graphical style and enemy types.
In each level, the player must defeat the various enemies while avoiding obstacles and collecting power-ups.
The game also includes boss enemies at the end of each stage.
Each boss has its own unique attack pattern and can only be defeated by using specific weapons and strategies.
The main gameplay involves controlling Silver Hawk's ship and shooting down enemies with its main weapon, the "Twin Laser".
Players can also collect power-ups such as missiles, bombs, extra lives, shields, and speed boosts to help them progress through the levels.
Additionally, players can also collect coins which can be used to purchase upgrades for Silver Hawk's ship such as increased firepower or enhanced defensive capabilities.
Darius Plus also includes an optional two-player mode where two people can play together cooperatively on one Game Boy system.
This mode allows both players to control separate ships at the same time while sharing lives and power-ups between them.
This mode was considered revolutionary for its time due to its focus on cooperative multiplayer gaming rather than competitive gaming which was more common in games at that time.
The visuals are simple but effective with colorful sprites depicting Silver Hawk's ship, enemies, and backgrounds set in space or underwater environments.
The soundtrack is catchy and upbeat featuring synthesized music composed by Takayuki Iwabuchi who also composed music for other Taito titles such as Bubble Bobble and Arkanoid II: Revenge of Doh.
Overall Darius Plus is a solid shooter for Nintendo Game Boy which offers a fun challenge with great visuals and sound design along with some innovative multiplayer options which were ahead of its time when it was first released in 1990.
Fans of classic shoot 'em up games should definitely check out this title if they have not done so already
