The Fortress is an action-packed, turn-based strategy game for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance. Players take the role of a lord who must defend his kingdom from rival factions using a combination of strategy, tactics, and resource management. Players start off as one of three lords: Duke Edward, Lord William or Lady Isabella. They must build and defend their fortress against invading forces while managing resources such as gold, wood, stone and food. As the game progresses players can upgrade their units to become more powerful while also researching new technologies to give them an edge in battle.

Skirmish allows players to customize their own battles with up to four human opponents or computer-controlled enemies. Tournament pits players against each other in a series of battles until only one victor remains while multiplayer allows up to four friends or foes to battle it out together over link cable or wireless connection .

The visuals in Fortress are detailed yet simple enough not to be overwhelming. The map is displayed on the top screen while menus are displayed on the bottom screen making navigation easy even for beginners.
