The game was released in Japan on April 28, 2004 and was later released in North America on October 10, 2005. Dig Dug is a classic arcade game that was originally released by Namco in 1982. It has since been ported to numerous platforms, including the GBA.
In Dig Dug, players control the character of Taizo Hori as he attempts to rid a subterranean world of various monsters by inflating them with his trusty pump until they burst. Along the way, he must also avoid being crushed by rocks that fall from the ceilings and floors of each stage or eaten by the infamous Fire Dragons who inhabit each level. The game features 50 levels of increasing difficulty and two unique boss fights at the end of each set of 25 levels.
The Famicom Mini version of Dig Dug faithfully recreates the look and feel of the original arcade game while adding some new features exclusive to this version. These include an enhanced color palette, improved sound effects, additional background music tracks and even a special “Time Attack” mode where players can race against an AI opponent to get through all 50 stages as quickly as possible. This version also includes a bonus “Museum Mode” which allows players to view artwork from all versions of Dig Dug over its long history, including some rare promotional pieces not found anywhere else.
Dig Dug remains one of the most beloved classics in gaming history and this version for the GBA does it justice with its faithful recreation of the original gameplay coupled with extra content exclusive to this version. Whether you’re a fan of retro gaming looking for a nostalgic fix or just someone looking for an enjoyable puzzle-action title for their GBA collection, Famicom Mini – Vol 16 – Dig Dug should definitely be on your list!
