Digimon Racing is a racing video game developed by Bandai Namco Entertainment for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance. The game was released in Japan on June 29, 2002 and North America on December 2, 2002. It is the third installment in the Digimon series of games and features characters from the Digimon anime series.
The story of Digimon Racing follows a group of seven kids who are chosen to be part of a race called the Digital Grand Prix. The Digital Grand Prix is an inter-dimensional race between different digital worlds. Each world has its own unique environment and terrain, as well as its own special Digimon racers. The racers must compete against each other using their own customized vehicles and weapons in order to become the champion racer of all digital worlds.
Players take control of one of seven characters from the Digimon anime series, including Agumon, Gabumon, Patamon, Renamon, Guilmon, Terriermon and Impmon. Players must customize their vehicle with parts found throughout the various worlds in order to make it faster and more powerful than their opponents. As players progress through each world they unlock new parts that can be used to upgrade their vehicle’s performance even further. In addition to racing against computer controlled opponents or friends in multiplayer mode, players can also battle against giant bosses in order to gain access to new areas and items within each world.
The game features three distinct game modes: Grand Prix mode which has players competing for points over multiple stages; Time Attack mode where players race against time; and Battle Mode which allows up to four player split-screen multiplayer battles using customized vehicles equipped with weapons from each world’s environment. Players can also link two Game Boys together via a Game Link Cable for two player head-to-head races or battles.
Digimon Racing features detailed visuals that remain faithful to the look of the anime series while taking full advantage of the GBA’s hardware capabilities at the time. The soundtrack is composed by Hideaki Takatori who also composed music for several other games in the Digimon franchise including Digimon World 3 and Digimon World 4 . The game also features voice acting from some of the original Japanese voice actors reprising their roles from previous entries in the series such as Megumi Urawa (Agumon), Chika Sakamoto (Gabumon) and Junko Takeuchi (Patamon).
Overall, Digimon Racing is an enjoyable racing experience that will appeal both to fans of the anime series as well as those seeking a challenging racing experience that takes full advantage of what GBA had to offer at time it was released. With its vibrant visuals, catchy soundtrack and wide variety of tracks & characters it stands out as one of best entries into Bandai Namco’s long running Digimon franchise.
